Dutch Innovation Credit for technical and clinical development, and how it applies to a company from abroad

The Dutch government lends money to companies for a technical or clinical development project with high risk. The scheme is called Innovatiekrediet, the Innovation Credit. You repay the credit when the project succeeds. The maximum is €10 million for a technical project and €5 million for a clinical project. Our team arranges the application.

Short answer

The Innovation Credit is for startups and established companies, large or small, with a technical or clinical development project with high risk. A large part of the work happens in the Netherlands.

A large company receives up to 25% of the project costs, a medium-sized company up to 35% and a small company up to 45%. With collaboration, this is up to 40% for a large company and up to 50% for smaller companies.

The credit is at most €10 million for a technical project and €5 million for a clinical project. A project is at least €150,000. Interest is 3% a year, and a successful project pays a one-off markup of 15% or 25%.

Companies can apply throughout 2026, until 31 December. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) handles complete applications in order of arrival. The budget for 2026 was €50 million and rose by €20 million in the autumn.

A Dutch private limited company (BV) of a group from abroad can apply when a large part of the activities happens in the Netherlands. At Holdwise, we set up that company and arrange the application.
