Where to find tenders
- TenderNed: the official Dutch platform where public tenders are published.
- Mercell and similar platforms: commercial services that collect relevant tenders and send you alerts.
- Direct from municipalities or organisations for smaller, informal procurements.
What public buyers expect
In public procurement, public buyers put fairness and accountability first. Expect detailed requirements, formal documentation and strict deadlines. You compete as much on process and credibility as on price or skill.
The DAS as a first step
Many public bodies use a dynamic purchasing system ("Dynamisch Aankoopsysteem", DAS) for ongoing categories such as consulting, training and IT support. For smaller businesses, registering in a DAS is often easier than a full tender and a realistic first step.
What it takes to bid
- Solid administrative basics: KVK details, references, financial information.
- Quality certifications when required.
- Insurance and standard terms ready to go.
- Time and attention to read tender documents and respond precisely.
Realistic expectations
Your first tender takes serious effort, and the outcome is uncertain. You earn back the effort over several bids. You reuse your documents, learn what specific buyers value and build a reputation as a credible supplier. See your first few tenders as a way to learn.
Tenders suit businesses that work consistently, keep good records and can afford the upfront investment in bidding. They are less suitable for businesses that need money quickly and would feel every lost bid.
Public clients often pay on longer terms than private ones, so plan your cash flow around that. Businesses that treat each tender as a chance to improve tend to win more over time.
