Why waiting costs more

Tax authorities already have most of this information. EU platforms report their sellers under DAC7: sellers of services from the first euro, sellers of goods from 30 sales or more than €2,000 a year. Foreign banks exchange balances under the Common Reporting Standard. For foreign income, the Dutch tax authority can reassess up to twelve years back. Most likely, you get a letter from the tax authority at a moment it chooses, with the numbers already attached.

Voluntary disclosure in four steps

  1. Reconstruct. Download the payout histories from every platform and payment processor, your bank statements and all brand deal invoices. Platforms keep these records for years, which now helps you.
  2. Correct. File or amend the returns for the affected years, declaring the income as it was.
  3. Disclose on your own initiative. The tax authority treats you very differently when you come forward before the inspector finds you. The penalty is reduced, and in the ordinary case you avoid prosecution. The case stays administrative: you pay the tax owed, interest and a reduced penalty.
  4. Pay and set up a structure. For large corrections, you can agree a payment arrangement. This is also a good moment to set up a company structure, so your future returns are correct.

What it roughly costs

You pay the tax that was always due, interest on the late years and a penalty. The penalty is much lower because you came forward first. If the tax authority finds you first, you pay the same tax and interest and a much higher penalty. In serious cases, there is also a criminal case. The difference between these two outcomes is the cost of waiting.

How advisers see these cases

Advisers handle these cases every week. For the adviser who handles your correction, it is paperwork with a deadline. Our intake for these cases is in writing and confidential, whatever content you make.

After the correction, set up a company structure and file correct returns from the start. You can begin with how creators pay less tax or start here.
