What it is and what it returns

The WBSO (the R&D wage-cost scheme) reduces the payroll tax you remit on qualifying development hours — genuinely new-to-you technical development: software, hardware, technical research. The relief runs to roughly a third of the first bracket of R&D wages, with a higher starter rate for young companies — real money at seed stage, when three developers’ credit can fund a fourth.

The rhythm

Apply per period in advance describing the development projects; receive the S&O declaration; reduce payroll remittances immediately; log hours per project as you go. The administration is light once templated — and the declaration doubles as the gateway to the 9% innovation box, which is where the scheme’s second payoff lives: the box.

Who qualifies and how founders use it

Any BV with development on Dutch payroll — including the founder’s own R&D hours on the books. The classic startup stack: WBSO funding the build, the innovation box rewarding the result, the kennismigrant route staffing the team (the hiring chapter), all inside the day-one skeleton: the structure. Applications are filed before the work period — the calendar habit worth building in month one.
