Research groups become spin-outs with the support of the institute, which often takes equity. With shared facilities, capital costs stay manageable. There is enough talent. Around the science, there is a small but real supplier base of companies in control electronics, cryogenics and photonics.
Funding over many years
Quantum companies raise money in stages over many years. The WBSO applies to the research payroll from the start (see the WBSO wage credit). National and European deep-tech programmes give grants on top of equity. Specialist funds invest with a time frame of ten years or more. See the financing map. Revenue often starts early, through supporting products and research contracts. It is taxed at the low first bracket while the long-term project continues.
Structure for long-term IP
Keep your options open with an IP holding at the top, an operating BV below it, and each product line ready to be split off. You can then do a licensing deal, a partnership or the sale of one line and keep the rest as it is.
