Step one: pick your residence route

  • EU citizens simply move — registration at the municipality is the whole procedure.
  • Americans hold the friendship-treaty route: a Dutch business plus €4,500 of maintained capital, decided by the IND within roughly four to six weeks. Full detail: DAFT for creators.
  • Everyone else uses the self-employed or startup routes, which reward a real business plan and real revenue — exactly what a working creator already has.

Step two: the Amsterdam shortcut — IN Amsterdam

The city runs an expat center (IN Amsterdam) that bundles municipal registration, the citizen service number (BSN) and permit formalities into coordinated appointments — the genuinely local advantage over arranging the same steps loose across the country. The BSN unlocks everything downstream: banking, payroll, health insurance.

Step three: housing, honestly

Amsterdam housing is tight and paperwork-driven. Landlords read payslips, and a DGA salary from your own BV (besloten vennootschap, the Dutch private limited company) reads far better than a platform dashboard — one more reason the structure precedes the apartment hunt rather than following it. Registering where you actually live matters legally; the address strategy for people with a public audience deserves its own decision before incorporation (privacy pages follow in a coming round).

Step four: the structure, in one act

Holding plus operating BV in a single notarial act, tax registrations, eHerkenning — the digital login for the Dutch tax portal — and payroll for your own salary. A multi-year lower customary salary agreed with the tax authority, combined with borrowing up to €500,000 from your own BV, saves roughly €18,000 to €20,000 a year in the growth phase. From there the machine runs: start here.

The 90-day rhythm

  1. Weeks 1–2: route chosen, IN Amsterdam appointments, BSN.
  2. Weeks 3–6: housing plus registration; bank intake started.
  3. Weeks 6–10: structure incorporated, payroll live, insurances set.
  4. Weeks 10–13: US tax forms refreshed to the new residence, platforms updated, the treaty rate working. Why that matters: US withholding.
