Is a notary always required?
Yes. Dutch law requires that a BV be incorporated via a notarial deed executed by a civil notary (notaris). There is no legal alternative. However, the law does not specify that you must visit a notary in person — online notary services are fully legally valid.
Online notary services in the Netherlands
Several platforms offer online BV incorporation:
- Firm24: from €399 including KVK registration
- Ligo: from €449 including deed and KVK
- Legalloyd: from €499
The process: fill in an online questionnaire, upload your ID, sign digitally or via a short video call, and receive your deed within 3–7 working days.
What is the difference in quality?
For standard BV structures, the legal quality is identical. Online notaries use standardised articles of association (statuten) that are adequate for most entrepreneurs. Where a traditional notary adds value: complex shareholder agreements, multiple share classes, international structures or personal advice on your specific situation.
When to choose a traditional notary
- Multiple shareholders with different rights (preference shares, voting structures)
- International elements (non-Dutch shareholders, cross-border structures)
- You want personal legal advice included
- Complex holding structures with specific articles
