The shift in mindset

Selling is far removed from convincing reluctant people. It is about finding the people who already have the problem you solve and showing them clearly that you can help. The right buyers are relieved to meet you rather than pestered.

Get your positioning sharp first

Vague offers are unsellable. "I help small Dutch online retailers reduce checkout drop-off" is referable. "I do marketing" is forgettable. Before any outreach, sharpen who you serve and what you achieve for them.

Listen before you pitch

Every good sales conversation starts with the customer's problem rather than your service. Ask, listen, repeat back what you heard. Only then explain how you might help. People hire those who clearly understand them.

Warm beats cold

Most starter clients come through warm channels: existing network, referrals, conversations at events. Cold outreach can work but is slower and harsher. Start where there is already trust.

Make outreach specific and useful

When you do reach out cold, make every message specific to the recipient and offer something useful rather than a generic pitch. A short, relevant, well-researched message beats a hundred copy-pasted ones.

Follow up while staying welcome

Most deals require multiple touches. A polite follow-up after a few days, then a final one a week or two later, is normal and effective. Disappearing after one message is the more common mistake than being pushy.

Tip: aim for fewer, better conversations. Five real conversations with the right people beat fifty generic pitches to the wrong ones.
